Two distinguished faculty members from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi have received national acclaim at the 2025 Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards at the Global Dreams Hotel in Tamale.
The ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Health, celebrated outstanding contributions to Ghana’s healthcare sector and drew dignitaries, academics and healthcare leaders from across the country.
Prof. (Mrs.) Veronica Millicent Dzomeku: Hall of Fame Inductee
At the ceremony, Prof. (Mrs.) Veronica Millicent Dzomeku, Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Ministry of Health.
This honour celebrates her lifetime contributions to nursing leadership, maternal health advocacy and academic mentorship.
Her recognition marks nearly three decades of transformative service and national impact.
Prof. Dzomeku’s legacy includes: Leadership in maternal health through initiatives in respectful maternity care, digital triage systems and maternal referral pathways.
Her academic excellence with over 50 scholarly publications and leadership in multisite research funded by NIH and USAID. Third, mentorship and advocacy in midwifery curriculum reform and capacity building and global collaboration to elevate midwifery as both a scholarly and clinical discipline.
Ghana’s First Professor of Midwifery
Prior to this national honour, Prof. Dzomeku made history as Ghana’s first Professor of Midwifery.
Her elevation to professorial rank set a new benchmark for midwifery education and leadership in the country. She earned her PhD from the University of Western Cape, South Africa, in 2017 and has since become a symbol of academic excellence and professional integrity.
Dr. Edward Appiah Boateng: Excellence in Education and Research
Dr. Edward Appiah Boateng, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Nursing at KNUST, was honoured in the Education and Research category for his innovative contributions to curriculum design, evidence-based teaching and academic mentorship.
He is a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana and a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.
Dr. Boateng obtained his BSc in Nursing from KNUST, followed by an MSc in Advanced Nursing from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom as a Commonwealth Scholar.
He was awarded a PhD in Nursing Studies from the same institution in December 2016.
Dr. Boateng has collaborated with researchers across disciplines and published in reputable peer-reviewed journals. His research interests focus on non-communicable diseases, particularly chronic kidney disease, and qualitative research methodologies.
He is actively involved in teaching and supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate students and continues to provide relevant service to KNUST, Ghana and the international academic community.
